Boon Tong Kee from Singapore is Here in Jakarta!

Hainanese Chicken rice has got to be one of my most favourite food in my whole life so far. It is also one of the foods that I set a very high standard on.
I have never tried a single plate of Hainanese chicken rice here in Jakarta that actually passes my standard level of being "good". Everything is either just mediocre or plain bad, to the point that I'm no longer interested in trying out new Hainanese Chicken Rice in town anymore. Or maybe it's not that bad actually, it's just me who is hard to please when it comes to this one specific dish.

That's why once Boon Tong Kee has opened their branch here in Jakarta, I was super excited about it. And by excited, I mean super excited. Especially for the fact that I know Boon Tong Kee is very popular in Singapore and well-known for their awesome Hainanese Chicken rice.

Disclaimer: I was doing my research on Boon Tong Kee while writing this post and apparently, Boon Tong Kee has opened a branch before in Jakarta, around Kelapa Gading area under the name Woon Tung Kee, which I never knew about since it is so far away from my place. But now that it has opened in Pantai Indah Kapuk, I can finally go and enjoy it!

Aside from the well-known Hainanese Chicken rice, Boon Tong Kee also serves a variety of Chinese home-style food. In fact, I would say that it caters more to the a la carte menu, as I don't see any set menus available for us to order.

Cutting down to the chase, let's have a look at their signature chickens down below!

Boon Tong Kee Signature Boiled Chicken (Half / Whole) IDR 105k - IDR 198k

Starting off with something great, this boiled chicken tastes really tender and juicy. It is also nicely seasoned while dipped in the soy sauce. This one definitely didn't disappoint me with its savoury and succulent meat.

Boon Tong Kee Signature Roasted Chicken (Half / Whole) IDR 105k - IDR 198k

This chicken didn't come out as good as I thought it would be. The whole texture was too dry and bland, there weren't any significant flavours coming out to me at all. A total letdown, I would say. I'd suggest you guys to go all the way for the Boiled Chicken.

Squid Rings with Mayonnaise IDR 70k

Now what could go wrong with deep fried squid rings? I've always loved this particular dish, but with that being said, the flavour is simply the same as any other squid rings out there. So there's nothing particularly special aside from the meat flosses on top of it.

Sweet and Sour Pork IDR 135k

This sweet and sour pork actually tastes pretty good, but the downside is that it is served in a very small portion considering the price isn't all that cheap either. Once you've compared the price, the portion and taste, it's just not that worth it.

Crispy Cereal Fish IDR 125k

Another dish that I genuinely liked from this place is this savoury crispy cereal fish, it was very fragrant from the moment it came out, the fish was really soft and crispy, while the flavour is simply very rich! It is one of the dishes that I would recommend you to order here.

Tofu Claypot Seafood IDR 98.5k

This tofu claypot seafood uses the usual Chinese style tofu, which I think would be better if they have used egg tofu for it. The overall taste is just so-so, but it is still a good match to have along with your rice.

Hainanese Rice IDR 11.5k

OKAY! THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST OF THE NIGHT! And I think that it is also the best Hainanese rice that I have ever tasted in town. I think this is probably the void that I've been looking for, the one that has always been missing from other Hainanese Chicken rice places. It's a pity that it is served in a pretty small portion though, I can never have enough!

In conclusion, I would say that I have finally found a place that serves a very good Hainanese rice for the Hainanese Chicken rice, but other than that, the foods here are way too overpriced for the portion they serve in my opinion.
